Since its inception in 1999, PBICs mission has been to improve the quality of life in communities through the increase of safe walking and bicycling as a viable means of transportation and physical activity. To support this mission, the PBIC:
- Develops, synthesizes, promotes and distributes accurate and current bicycling and walking information
- Provides expert technical assistance to various audiences to ensure that citizens and professionals have access to the best available information
- Generates a network of informed individuals and organizations who can increase the exposure of ped/bike issues to the general public
The PBIC is managed and operated by staff at the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, including engineers, urban planners, public health specialists, web site specialists, researchers, computer programmers, communication specialists, and others. We partner with the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) and we also have a team of other Organizations and Consultants who work with the PBIC on a variety of tasks. Our team of experts are very knowledgeable on walking and bicycling issues and are truly committed to improving safety, health, and mobility for those who wish to walk or bicycle.
The mission of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center is to improve the quality of life in communities through the increase of safe walking and bicycling as a viable means of transportation and physical activity.
To support this mission, the PBIC focuses its efforts in four areas:
