Implementation of new safety lane

In order to expand the range of measures to secure bicycle traffic on narrow roads, the Working Community of Bicycle-friendly Municipalities in Baden-Württemberg has carried out the pilot project "Safety Lanes" from 2010-

23 km of an abandoned railway line in disuse since 1999 were converted into a walkway and cycle track with 7 tunnels and 23 bridges with subsidies from the EU, the Federal Government and the State. The project received numerous awards.

Public participation on bicycle parking facilities within an urban district

Within Nurembergs cycling promotion campaign “Nürnberg steigt auf” (Nuremberg gets on the bike) an improvement of bicycle parking facilities was planned. By systematically expanding small to medium-sized units of bicycle racks within an urban area, short distances to the next bicycle parking facilities are to be ensured.

The project aims to motivate jobholders to use the bicycle for their daily commutes as well as for business trips. That should lead to an increase in cycling's modal share. Due to the hilly topography in many Baden-Württemberg regions, especially pedelecs provide suitable options.

Protecting cyclists in street space
In one of Soest's one-way streets, cyclist passed very close to parked cars while they were overtaken by motorized traffic. The municipality of Soest decided to implement a cycle lane in the middle of the road.

Providing cycling mobility for children and youth from low-income households
In many cases, children from low-income households cannot access roadworthy bicycles. By implementing the program "Every Child gets a Bike", the city of Tübingen reacts to that problem. Low-income families get the opportunity to check and repair their childrens` bicycles for free. Furthermore, the city authority collects unused bikes from the local population and passes them to the target group.
