ZIV develops standardized range test R200 for e-bikes - comparability of range, battery capacity and energy efficiency
"How far can I get on my e-bike?" - range is a central question and a decisive criterion when buying an e-bike. So far, there have been various determination approaches, but the procedures could only be compared and reproduced to a very limited extent. The bicycle industry association (ZIV) has therefore developed the "R200 standardized range test". On this basis, manufacturers, dealers and end customers can objectively compare the ranges of different e-bikes. The association obtained support for the development of the test from practical experience. The Accell Group, Bosch E-Bike Systems, Shimano and Velotech provided advice.
The new procedure can be carried out on qualified test benches and is characterized in particular by reproducible results. Relevant influencing factors include the battery, the drive system, the drive train, and the tires of the e-bike. In addition, the range of an e-bike depends very much on the selected support mode (e.g. eco, sport, turbo). In order to make the results comparable, all e-bikes are standardized in the new procedure to a uniform support factor of 200 percent (hence "R200"). 200 percent support factor means that the drive system of the e-bike also supports 140W at a rider power of 70W. In addition, the battery capacity and energy consumption of the e-bike are shown in the "Standardized Range Test R200".
In addition to the conditions of the e-bike, other factors influence the range. These include weight, type of terrain, surface, starting frequency and wind conditions. To ensure comparability, the test is based on values (typical conditions) for these parameters. Tests prove that this approach and the ranges determined with the method are realistic and reproducible.
