From May 2017 onwards, uniform and transparent regulation for bikes on public transport in Baden-Württemberg as well as enlargement of the transport capacity

On 30 September 2016 ended in Baden-Württemberg the “Große Verkehrsvertrag”, which was concluded in 2003 between the state of Baden-Württemberg and the German railway. Its scope is now to be allocated anew until 2020. In the meantime, an interim contract was made which has significant improvements for the passengers like the introduction of the unified free bicycle carriage. Starting April 30, 2017, passengers can take a bicycle free of charge on working days before 6 am and after 9 am and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays all day. Until then, the driving capacities for wheelchairs, baby carriages and bicycles will be significantly expanded.

As bicycles count two-wheeled single-seat bicycles, pedelecs and e-bikes with pedals. In case of sufficient space, tandems, bicycle trailers or bicycle special constructions (e.g. recumbent bicycles, tricycles) can be carried along free of charge. However, passengers with wheelchairs or baby carriages as well as passengers without bicycles will still have priority.

The Deutsche Bahn has compiled a brochure to inform about the changes (in German).
