Better coordination of cycling policy at federal level
Parliamentary Circle on Cycling founded
ZIV: Parliamentary Circle on Cycling founded
The joint parliamentary evening of the bicycle associations ADFC, VSF and ZIV took place in Berlin on 10 October 2018 under the motto "Factor Bicycle: Economic Power and Quality of Life". More than 200 guests from politics, business, science and associations accepted the invitation to discuss the economic importance of bicycles and cycling in general.
Parliamentary State Secretary Enak Ferlemann said that it was the declared aim of the BMVI to significantly increase the bicycles modal share and to provide the necessary funds for this, even though the federal government's scope for competence is limited.
In his opening speech, Cem Özdemir, Chairman of the Transport Committee of the Bundestag, spoke of the pioneering invention of the bicycle. He wished to hear more often about the important economic power of the bicycle and bicycle tourism, instead of always only about the economic power of the car. Özdemir paid tribute to the progress made in promoting cycling, but also called on the federal government to do much more. The financial resources for cycling should be increased and equal rights for bicycles should be created, e.g. with regard to parking spaces or company car taxation. In conclusion, he appealed to all those present to work to ensure that Germany is no longer just a land of cars but also a land of bicycles.
In the following panels numerous topics around the economic power of the bicycle were touched upon. They dealt with industry, the specialist trade, the bicycle start-up scene and the new possibilities in logistics thanks to load bikes. Furthermore, there was talk about bicycle tourism and the health and economic advantages of cycling.
The last item on the agenda was the establishment of the Parliamentary Circle on Cycling. Gero Storjohann, reporter for cycling of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, officially founded the parliamentary group together with his colleagues from the other parliamentary groups Stefan Gelbhaar (B90/Grüne), Mathias Stein (SPD), Andreas Wagner (Die Linke) and Dr. Christian Jung (FDP). The Parliamentary Circle on Cycling is to carry the topics bicycle and bicycle traffic still more strongly into the Bundestag and is open for all interested delegates as well as coworkers. As co-initiators, the bicycle associations were very pleased that this parliamentary group now exists and hope that it will give greater consideration to bicycles in the political debate.
The Zweirad-Industrie-Verband e. V. ZIV (two-wheel-industry-organization) is the national and international representative of the german and international bicycle-, e-bike and accessory industry.
