Number of cyclists killed through traffic accidents increased significantly

According to Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in 2018, a total of 3,275 people were killed in traffic accidents in Germany. This was 95 traffic accident fatalities or 3 percent more than in the previous year. The number of persons injured rised to 396,000 (1.5% or 5,706 injured persons more than in 2017).

57 percent of people killed in traffic accidents on rural roads.

As in previous years, most accidents involving personal injury occurred within built-up areas in 2018 (69.0%), but only 30.0% of fatalities were registered here. On rural roads 24.3% of accidents involving personal injury occurred, but 57.0% of road accident victims died here. Motorways accounted for 6.7% of all accidents involving personal injury and 12.9% of all fatalities. Accidents on roads outside built-up areas have worse consequences than on roads in built-up areas, partly because of the higher speeds involved. On rural roads, other risk factors such as the lack of separation from oncoming traffic, poor overtaking opportunities, intersections or unprotected obstacles such as trees beside the roadway are added to the risk.

Number of cyclists killed increased by 16.8 percent compared to 2010

Compared to 2010, the number of road deaths has fallen by 10.2%. There are significant differences with regard to the type of traffic involvement: The number of car occupants killed was 22.6% lower in 2018. For pedestrians and people who died on a motorcycle such as a moped or a motorbike, the decreases were much smaller at 3.8% and 1.7% respectively. In contrast, the number of cyclists killed rose by 16.8% compared with 2010.

Most road fatalities in 2018 were car occupants

Nevertheless, most road deaths in 2018 were passenger car occupants: 1,424 people were killed in a car accident, 697 on a motorcycle. 458 of the road deaths were pedestrians, 445 cyclists and 174 were occupants of goods road transport vehicles. Another 77 people were killed in other ways, for example by agricultural tractors (20) or as bus passengers (9).
