Market data for bicycles and e-bikes in Germany for the first half of 2018 - German bicycle industry benefits from optimal weather conditions

In the first half of 2018, only a cool March clouded the otherwise excellent weather conditions. Both industry and trade were pleased with the ideal conditions for cycling and thus also with the economic development of the bicycle, e-bike, components and accessories market.

The production of bicycles and pedelecs/e-bikes in the first half of 2018 (January - June) was slightly above the previous year at an estimated 1.33 million (+1.9 percent) units produced and thus again at a high level. Sales of bicycles and e-bikes also rose by 6 percent. This corresponds to a volume of 2.8 million vehicles sold channels between January and June.

It can also be assumed that sales of bicycles, e-bikes, components and accessories will exceed the level of the comparable period in 2017.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, imports of bicycles and pedelecs/e-bikes to Germany rose by 10 percent to around 2.17 million. The share of e-bikes in imports in the period January - June was approx. 25 percent.

Exports of bicycles and pedelecs/e-bikes also rose by 11 percent to 0.73 million in the first half of 2018. The share of e-bikes in exports in the period January - June was approx. 34 percent.
