Market data for bicycles and pedelecs in Germany for the 1st half of 2019

The bicycle market has stabilized at a good level, and e-bike sales are growing. The Bicycle Industry Association estimates that around 920,000 pedelecs were sold through retailers in the first half of 2019. Double-digit growth of around 12 percent is expected for the year as a whole.

Bicycle and e-bike industry makes a successful start to the season

Germans own more than 75 million bicycles, of which around 4.5 million are e-bikes. All model groups are now available both with and without electric assistance. The joy of cycling is also expressed in figures. Perfect weather conditions last ensured that 2018 was a very successful year in economic terms.

In contrast, the weather in the 1st half of 2019 was somewhat more changeable than in the previous year. Nevertheless, the two-wheel industry association expects that approx. 2.93 million bicycles and e-bikes were sold between January and June. This is an increase of around 3.2 percent.

Production was also increased again. In the first six months, 1.47 million vehicles were produced. This represents an increase of approximately 4.6 percent.

Overall, it can be assumed that sales of bicycles, e-bikes, components and accessories have therefore also increased. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, imports of bicycles and e-bikes increased by around 6.1 percent during the period under review. The share of e-bikes in imports was about 26 percent.

Exports of bicycles and e-bikes also showed a significant increase. Between January and June, the export volume rose by almost 14.1 percent. The e-bike share of exports was around 36 percent.

E-bike sales again increased significantly

While the market for bicycles without electric assistance has stabilized at a good level in recent years, the e-bike market will continue to expand in 2019. German Bike Industry Association ZIV estimates that around 920,000 e-bikes were sold via dealers in the first half of 2019. The industry therefore expects to sell more than 1.1 million vehicles in 2019 as a whole. This would correspond to double-digit growth of around 12 percent.
