Germany: Number of cyclists killed from march to june 2020 drops by 11.5 percent compared to 2019

Federal Statistical Office: Overall fewer traffic accidents in the corona crisis - Lower decline in cyclists involved in accidents due to increase in bicycle traffic

With the nationwide lockdown in mid-march 2020, the number of bicycle accidents dropped, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office. Nevertheless, there were more bicycle accidents in April and May than in April and May 2019. In traffic accident statistics, bicycle accidents occupy a special position in that they have increased in recent years, unlike accidents involving other modes of transportation. The DESTATIS traffic accidents calender  (text in German) shows defenitely that the bike season has become longer during the last years, In addition, there are more bicycle accidents on weekdays than on weekends. Since the turn of the millennium, more and more people have been using bicycles to get to school and work, and this trend has intensified in recent years. At weekends, on the other hand, cycling is predominantly a leisure activity. In the period from January to May 2020, nine fewer cyclists died than in the previous year.

  • March to June 2020: killed cyclists 162 // injured cyclists 31,087

Number of traffic fatalities from March to June 2020 at an all-time low

Never since German unification in 1990 have fewer people been killed in road accidents in the period from March to June. A total of 880 people died in traffic accidents during these four months in 2020. From March to June 2019, there had been 1,069 traffic fatalities. The number of people injured also fell significantly during this period to just under 98,300 people. This represented a year-on-year decrease of 17.7 percent in traffic fatalities and 25.5 percent in injuries.

Number of motor vehicle and bicycle fatalities and injuries fell only below average

Die Zahl der Verkehrstoten ist bei Pkw-Insassen sowie Fußgängerinnen und Fußgängern überdurchschnittlich zurückgegangen. Von März bis Juni 2020 kamen 342 Menschen in einem Pkw ums Leben, 21,7 Prozent weniger als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Die Zahl der getöteten Fußgängerinnen und Fußgänger sank um 23,9 Prozent auf 83. Bei Kraftrad- und Fahrradfahrenden war der Rückgang dagegen deutlich geringer. Von März bis Juni 2020 verunglückten 230 Kraftradnutzerinnen und -nutzer tödlich, 12,2 Prozent weniger als von März bis Juni 2019. Die Zahl der getöteten Fahrradfahrerinnen und -fahrer sank um 11,5 Prozent auf 162. 

Eine ähnliche Entwicklung zeigt sich auch bei der Zahl der Verletzten. Die Zahl der verletzten Pkw-Insassen sank um 37,0 Prozent, die der verletzten Fußgängerinnen und Fußgänger um 34,4 Prozent. Dagegen war es bei Kraftradnutzerinnen und -nutzern nur ein Minus von 16,0 Prozent. Die Zahl der verletzten Fahrradfahrerinnen und -fahrer blieb fast auf dem Vorjahresniveau: Der Rückgang betrug hier nur 0,8 Prozent.
