On 2. June 2017 the Bundesrat approved a law decision of the German Bundestag. Now, cycle highways of the Federal States and the municipalities can be co-financed by Federal funds, if they enable a fast and free-flowing cycle traffic with more than 2,000 journeys per day and a width of 4 meters. Furthermore they should not primarily touristic routes, but important for  commuter traffic.
