Federal state provides help for setting truck mirrors

© Deutscher Verkehrssicherheitsrat e. V., Bonn

Especially children and cyclists were often overseen due to wrong mirror settings. Truck drivers in particular have a limited field of vision for two reasons: their elevated sitting position and the lacking back window in the driver's cabin. Hence, turning and overtaking situations can lead to dangerous accidents with damage to persons.

"The system, which was developed by the experts from the DEKRA together with the manufacturers Mercedes and MAN consists of different ground markings, which help truck drivers to optimally set their various kinds of mirrors in a quick time. Until now, about 240 of those mirror setting facilities were implemented all over Europe, on public service areas as well as on logistic company sides", explains Dr.-Ing. Jens Walther, head of the DEKRA office in Dresden.

Since September 2014 the facilities for mirror setting were implemented on at all motorway service areas in Saxony. The project carried out by Saxony's State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport (English page) together with the Tank- und Rast AG and the DEKRA.
