Cycling promotion by the Federal Government raises up to 200 million Euro per year
On 2 August 2017, the "National Diesel Forum“, comprising Federal Ministers Dobrindt, Hendricks, Schäuble, Zypries und Wanka, the Minister-Presidents of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland plus the Governing Mayor of Berlin and the First Mayor of Hamburg, met with representatives of the automotive industry in Berlin.
The Federal Government and the federal states have set out their requirements and measures in a joint statement on the "National Diesel Forum" in order to make an effective contribution to a speedy and lasting reduction in NOx emissions and to the protection of the health and consumer rights of the public.
One of the measures concerns cycling promotion, which shall increase by 75 million Euro per year. The statement lays down:
"Promotion of cycling. Cycling contributes significantly emission-free urban mobility. We support the construction of cycle highways and expand the funds for cycling promotion on urban model project – i.e. the combination of cycling with other means of transport as well as the implementation of cycling in intelligent traffic regulation."
