Baden-Württemberg celebrates 200 years of cycling
In 2017 one of the Baden-Württemberg brilliants inventions celebrates its 200th anniversary: The "Laufmaschine" (running machine) which is the precursor of the bicycle was developed in 1817 in Mannheim by the German inventor Karl Drais who was born in Karlsruhe.
Lots of acitvities during the anniversary year 2017
Highlights of the bicentenary jubilee are a jubilee competition for project ideas on the bicycle jubilee (ideas phase July 2016-Oct. 2016 is already finished). Under the motto "jubilee tour - most sustainable roadshow of the world" a mobile museum and future lab on e-bikes will be on its way through Baden-Württemberg from May to August 2017.
Also the traditional "Stallwächterparty" (traditional summer party) of Baden-Württemberg's state representation in Berlin will be held on July 6th 2017 under the motto "200 years of bicycle".
Baden-Wuerttemberg's major regional exhibition " 2 Wheels - 200 Years. Freiherr von Drais and the History of the Bicycle" opened on November 11th 2016 at Mannheim's Technoseum. Also one of the three main focuses of the homeland days 2017 in Karlsruhe is the bicycle. In April 2017 the 5th National Cycling Congress of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure will be held in Mannheim. And the initiative "RadKULTUR Baden-Württemberg", which is founded in 2012, will also deserve its actions along the jubilee.
The "Drais-Cities" Mannheim and Karlsruhe celebrate the 200th anniversary with several month of festivities. Mannheim celebrates the anniversary year under the motto "Monnem Bike – wo alles began" (Monnem bike – the place where everything started). Highlights are a citywide festival on June 10th and 11th and a final show in the courtyard of the castle on September 16th. The city of Karlsruhe as the hometown of the bicycle inventor invites to several events, the central festival weekend will be on May 25th to 28th 2017.
