Honoured for outstanding contribution to cycling and sustainable mobility
Manfred Neun honoured with Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit
Honour for outstanding contribution to cycling and sustainable mobility - awarded by State Minister Carolina Trautner
Manfred Neun, long-time President of the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) and current ECF Honorary President, was awarded the "Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany" for his outstanding long-term cycling contribution. The award was presented by Carolina Trautner, State Minister for Family, Labour and Social Affairs. Mayor Dr. Hans-Martin Steiger attended the ceremony in Augsburg on behalf of Lord Mayor Manfred Schilder and conveyed the congratulations of the City of Memmingen. "We congratulate Manfred Neun very warmly on this well-deserved award. He has shown exceptional commitment to cycling promotion and sustainable mobility for many years," Mayor Dr. Steiger paid tribute.
From 2005 to 2017, Manfred Neun was President of the "European Cyclists' Federation" (ECF), of which he is now Honorary President. Under his leadership, the ECF and its office in Brussels have developed into an important advocate and advisor for the interests of cyclists. The ECF represents organisations from 40 countries across Europe and the world.
Neun‘s work has created financial opportunities and alliances for the ECF, without which the development into a professional international federation within a decade would not have been possible. Under his presidency, the international cities and regions network "Cities for Cyclists" was taken over by the ECF. The international network "Scientists for Cycling" was also newly founded under Mr Neun's leadership in 2010.
On the initiative of Manfred Neun, the previously biennial international conference series Velo-city was held annually from 2009 onwards. The conference now has the status of the "Annual Cycling Summit" and has become an indispensable international marketplace for all important cycling policy topics, ideas and the exchange of best practice examples.
In 2014, under Manfred Neun's leadership, the World Cycling Alliance network was founded and he chaired its Steering Board. He has transformed the core topic of cycling for the ECF from a purely transport policy issue to a topic for all social and political areas in the sense of the three sustainability dimensions - social, economic and ecological. His contributions to the association as well as his many appearances as a speaker have greatly contributed to the recognition of the potential and positive effects of cycling for the quality of life in cities and regions as well as for sustainable economic, climate, energy and health policies.
Manfred Neun was also involved in 2017 as a co-organiser at the international conference in Mannheim on the 200th anniversary of the bicycle.
