Pilot project in Berlin: "KoMoDo"

Parcel delivery by cargo bikes successfully tested

Micro-deposits as a starting point for the delivery of goods with cargo bikes are a transferable solution for municipalities to make delivery traffic environmentally friendly. The delivery of freight bikes from the Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg location will be continued after the end of the project.

The twelve-month test phase of the KoMoDo model project has proven that the use of cargo bikes for the delivery of parcels and the joint use of a micro-depot location by several parcel service providers is efficient if certain conditions are met.

The aim of the project was to test sustainable solutions for delivery traffic in urban areas and also to develop transferable solutions for other municipalities. The KoMoDo project (Cooperative use of micro-deposits by the courier, express and parcel industries for the sustainable use of cargo bikes in Berlin) was funded by the Federal Environment Ministry. One year after the start of the pilot project, the participants draw a positive balance.

During the one-year project period, extensive findings were collected.

The practical test showed that micro-deposits and cargo bikes can be used efficiently, especially in areas with a high receiver density and a consignment structure suitable for cargo bikes (number of packages, volume and weight).

The use of cargo bikes on the last mile is environmentally friendly, as journeys with conventional delivery vehicles are replaced. The deliverers used mainly electrically supported cargo bikes within a radius of up to three kilometres around the micro-depot location in Prenzlauer Berg. As a result, they were able to save around eleven tons of CO2 compared to conventional delivery vehicles. Up to eleven cargo bikes were in use every day. A total of over 38,000 km were covered.

In the area surrounding the micro-depots, around 160,000 parcels were delivered by Germany's five largest parcel service providers with cargo bikes in the last twelve months as part of the model project. The parcel service providers involved were able to continuously increase the parcel volumes delivered during the course of the project.

In densely populated inner cities, public space is a scarce ressource. It should therefore be used cooperatively and therefore particularly efficiently. Through the use of micro-deposits and cargo bikes, both the cities and the companies can benefit.

Continuation of parcel delivery by cargo bikes in Berlin

For the parcel service providers involved, the project offered the opportunity to test parcel delivery with cargo bikes from micro-deposits in Berlin. Their conclusion: the micro-depot model has proven itself in principle. The project partners would therefore consolidate the micro-depot approach. Even after the end of public funding (1 July 2019), the parcel service providers involved will continue to use the current location for another six-month period for the delivery of cargo bikes. The Berlin-Pankow district office has already approved the extended use of space for this purpose.

In addition, the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, together with the districts and BEHALA, will search for suitable locations for further micro-deposits in Berlin on the basis of the project results.

The project was funded with around 400,000 euros as part of the federal funding call "climate action and cycling" of the National Climate Initiative (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety).
