Numbers - data - facts on  Germany’s bicycle market 2017 / Sales in the bicycle industry increased again

The bicycle celebrated its anniversary in 2017 and even 200 years after its invention it has lost nothing of its attractiveness and fascination. Products from Germany in particular have ensured that the market for bicycles, e-bikes, components & accessories has been setting new sales records for years. Innovation and quality are the attributes that inspire consumers nationally and internationally.

Sales of bicycles and e-bikes increased to 2.69 billion euros in 2017. This is an increase of around 3.2 percent. The components and accessories sector is also at this level, resulting in an estimated total turnover for the German bicycle, e-bike, components and accessories industry of approx. 5.4 billion euros.

At 3.85 million units, sales of bicycles and e-bikes in 2017 were 5 percent below the previous year.

The increase in average sales price per bicycle (including e-bikes) is responsible for the further increase in sales. In 2017, this was EUR 698 across all sales channels, 8.6 percent higher than in 2016.

In general, the trend towards purchasing products with high-quality equipment is continuing. However, this also means that there is less demand for bicycles in the entry area. Consumers are increasingly opting for products that, due to their high quality, promise an extended service life. This applies to both bicycles and e-bikes.

With 720,000 units sold, the market share of e-bikes in the overall bicycle market increased to 19 percent. In the medium term, the German Bicycle Industry Association is thus revising its forecast to an expected 23-25 percent share of the total bicycle market. In the long term, a market share of up to 35 percent could be achieved.

These attributes are ultimately also responsible for the strong demand for the products of the German bicycle industry, not only in Germany but also abroad. Combined exports of bicycles and e-bikes increased by 1 percent to 1.16 million units in 2017. E-bike exports rose to 291,000 units, 25 percent above the previous year.

According to ZIV estimates, the number of bicycles in Germany (including e-bikes) increased to 73.5 million in 2017. The proportion of e-bikes included in this figure is estimated at around 3.5 million vehicles.

The share of model groups within the e-bike category (according to sales) is as follows: e-city/urban 38.5 percent, e-trekking 35.5 percent, e-mtb 21.5 percent, e-cargo bike 3 percent, fast e-bikes 1 percent and others with 0.5 percent.
