Bicycle Market Numbers - Data - Facts for the first half of 2014 presented
The German Bike Association (Zweirad-Industrie-Verband e.V. (ZIV) assumes, that in Germany about 2.8 million bicycles and e-bikes were sold to end-consumers between January and July 2014. That implicates a four percent increase in comparison to the first half of 2013. With regard to the constantly good weather conditions, the ZIV supposes that the positive trend will continue for the rest of the year 2014.
Regarding the bicycle and e-bike production of 1.6 million exemplars in the first half of 2014, a small decrease can be considered. For the ZIV a difficult 2013 season is responsible for that. Because of the bad weather conditions, producers as well as retailers hold stock at the end of the year, which was sold at the beginning of 2014. Hence, the production of new exemplars was planned conservatively. For the same reason, bicycle import into as well exports out of Germany experienced small decreases.
E-bikes growth further
Within the e-bike segment, the booming tendency holds on and provides good sales. The ZIV estimates that 450,000 exemplars could be sold in Germany this year. In the medium term, the ZIV assumes, that the e-bike market in Germany will reach an annual share of about 15 percent of the total market. That would be equivalent to a quantity of 600,000 e-bikes per year. Currently more than 1.8 million e-bikes are in use on Germany's streets.
The cycling trend goes on
The bicycle and the e-bike are developing more and more from free time vessels to everyday mobility partners. The bicycle's increasing relevance as a part of everyday mobility is underlined by the fact that city-bikes as well as trekking-bikes are among the most popular models on the German market. The increased everyday bicycle usage and the high share of bikes from specialised shops lead to a growing demand in high-value components, accessories and workshop services, what strengthens specialised trade in turn.
